This is an exciting time for The Brain Tumour Charity as we pursue our twin goals of doubling survival and halving the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life. We need dynamic and inspirational people to help us deliver our strategy and are seeking to add to our team by recruiting a Data Governance Manager, to ensure we continue to protect the community’s privacy while maximising the potential of The Charity’s data.
Reporting into the Director of Finance and Governance, who is also the Data Protection Officer, this role will be vital in ensuring our compliance of laws and regulations, assisting the wider charity through education and support, updating and creation of policies, participation in the refinement of processes.
📍Location: While contracted to our office in Fleet, Hampshire, our team supports a blend of office and home working provided you have adequate broadband and IT capability, with an average of 2-3 days in the office each week.
⏰Working hours: This role is 37.5 hours per week, with some out of hours working. We’re open to part-time working of 30 hours and above, and we operate a flexible working policy.
💰Benchmarked salary: c.£33,300 (dependent on level)
The successful candidate will be a first line responder to potential data breach alerts and will provide technical guidance to the Data Protection Officer. They will be supporting all teams across The Charity in their data governance. This role will combine accountability and responsibility for information protection and privacy, information governance and data life cycle management, allowing the exploitation of data assets to create business value. The post holder will help drive our data culture and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with the community, donors, colleagues, trustees, volunteers and stakeholders. Having the ability to work with individuals at all levels.
- Ensure that the processing of personal data is compliant in line with the GDPR / DPA 2018 and PECR, following regulatory guidance
- Lead on the completion of ethics applications and data sharing agreements which allow us both share our data and use external data to accelerate our progress
- Ensure we continue to meet our high NHS data compliance standards
- Support project planning and management to ensure best practice and legal frameworks including the code of fundraising practice and other regulations
- Support the resolution of the challenges arising from cross-country data regulations as The Charity expands more globally
- Lead on the development and training of teams across The Charity to ensure data governance policies and practices are embedded throughout the organisation
- Support and supervise information stewardship activities and management of data quality, retention and uses
- Build and maintain a detailed audit of The Charity’s core systems and of the information assets that are held in these systems
- Drive large-scale, cross-functional privacy enhancement projects. Maintain the Information Asset Register, Record of Processing Activities (RoPA), and Data Retention Schedule to ensure that they are up-to-date and accurate.
- Facilitate and promote the use of Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), Legitimate Interests Assessments (LIAs), Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs), confidentiality agreements and individual privacy notices, including the management of cookies. Offer practical privacy advice on innovative business initiatives, such as Generative AI, automation and personalisation.
- Oversee the management of medium and large-scale personal data incidents, including investigation, response, notification assessment and remediation.
- Develop resources and conduct training sessions to improve understanding and application of data protection principles. Regularly update our knowledge library to ensure accessible resources and tools for data protection.
- Manage the DPO inbox, escalate issues as necessary and handle all data subject rights requests, while maintaining a master list for tracking purposes.
- Draft internal policies, procedures and guidance materials while maintaining compliance documentation.
- Collaborate with the People & Culture and IT teams to support the governance framework and contribute to cybersecurity initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with contracts through monitoring, auditing, and risk assessment. Review and approve software to guarantee adherence to data protection standards and charity policies.
The post holder will also;

- Participate in team meetings and other meetings as required.
- Monitor and evaluate activities and provide written reports.
- Represent The Charity at external events in a professional manner.

- Work closely with the EDI team on initiatives related to data availability, transparency, accuracy and other data protection goals.

Qualifications
- Essential - A graduate information management or data governance qualification or equivalent knowledge while working within an information or data governance setting.
- Desirable - Existing membership (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional body or other professional certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPT or CIPM
- Desirable - Cyber Security qualification or equivalent.
Experience
- A minimum of 3-5 years experience working in data protection
- A deep understanding of data protection and it's practical application
- Experience promoting a data protection culture and data protection awareness within an organisation.
- Experience implementing data protection frameworks, policies and processes.
- A good understanding of information management practices including information lifecycle management, data modelling, master data management and carrying out business audits and requirements gathering
Knowledge
- Ability to manage data with clear understanding of the data’s intention
- Strong ability to extract information by questioning, active listening and interviewing
- Thorough knowledge of GDPR, the DPA and PECR regulations
- Specialist knowledge of data governance principles and practices, while keeping abreast of legal and regulatory developments
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – able to liaise with staff at all levels within The Charity
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to create clear requirements, specifications and documentation
- Strong ability to communicate information, processes and system wide changes to a technical and nontechnical audience
- A commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to remain up to date with new data privacy legislation
- Retain an awareness of major changes in IT security methods
- Ability to work on own initiative within agreed boundaries
- Ability to work under pressure and manage priorities
- Flexible and adaptable
